Professional Recessed Lighting Installation in Cumming, Georgia
Recessed lighting (also called can lights or downlights) is one of the most popular upgrades for North Georgia homes — and for good reason. It provides clean, unobtrusive illumination, eliminates shadows in corners, and can make a room feel larger and more modern. But installing recessed lighting is not as simple as cutting holes in your ceiling and running wires. You need to consider: insulation contact ratings (IC vs. non-IC housings), joist placement (lights must fit between framing), proper spacing for even illumination, transformer access for low-voltage fixtures, and attic access for wiring. Improper installation can create fire hazards, heat loss, air leakage, or a ceiling that looks like a polka-dotted mess.
At Rob Ingram’s Freestyle Lighting and Electrical, we design and install recessed lighting systems that look professional and work perfectly. We start with a consultation to understand your goals: general ambient lighting, task lighting over a kitchen island, accent lighting for artwork, or wall washing to highlight texture. Then we calculate proper spacing (typically half the ceiling height) and layout to avoid dark spots. We use only IC-rated, airtight housings that can safely touch insulation and prevent air leakage into your attic. For low ceilings or shallow attics, we use ultra-thin LED wafer lights that fit almost anywhere. Our service area includes Cumming, Alpharetta, Dawsonville, Gainesville, and all of North Georgia. Call us today and bring your ceilings to life.
Many electricians just cut holes and install lights wherever you point. We do better. We calculate proper spacing, align lights with architectural features (not random spots), and ensure every light is perfectly level. We use IC-rated, airtight housings as our standard — no shortcuts, even if your attic has no insulation today (it might in the future). For two-story homes with no attic access, we can still install recessed lighting using old-work housings and careful fishing of wires. And every recessed lighting installation includes a free panel inspection to ensure your circuit can handle the new load. We also offer dimmer installation so you can control the mood.

A: A general rule is to space lights half the ceiling height apart. For an 8-foot ceiling, space lights 4 feet apart. A typical 12x12 living room needs 4 to 6 lights. We'll provide a specific layout during consultation.
A: IC-rated housings can be safely buried in attic insulation. Non-IC housings require 3 inches of clearance from insulation, which is difficult to maintain and creates air gaps. We only install IC-rated.
A: Yes. For two-story homes or rooms with no attic above, we use "old work" or "remodel" housings that install from below. For ultra-low clearance, we use thin LED wafers that are only 1/2 inch thick.
A: Yes. LED recessed lights use 80-90% less energy than incandescent, last 25 times longer, produce less heat, and come in adjustable color temperatures (warm to cool white). We install only LED.
